Great blog post. We used a Cashbook complete for several years http://www.acclaim.co.nz/ but found it onerous regularly uploading. I tried heaps for a while and liked it but again frustrated that I had to keep uploading (non kiwibank). I thought Xero personal was going to be my answer and was even prepared to pay but personal version gets no automated bank feeds!! Your post alerted me to anzmoney manager - exactly what I want, auto feeds, multi bank, custom categories ... Now why havent my bank (ANZ NZ) told me about it, they are lucky to still have me as a customer but this might just keep me with them.

I totally agree that more New Zealanders need to actively 'manage' their finances. After using MS Money for several years then training as a budget advisor in Christchurch, I have developed 'Watch My Budget', software for managing personal finances in a visual and integrated way. It supports manual importing of QIF files so can be used with any NZ bank.

Unlike many finance programs, in Watch My Budget the budget comes first and is used to forecast the next year or two to see what you can or cannot afford to do. An integrated cash flow spreadsheet can be used to micro-manage the upcoming pay periods. Tracking of actual transactions involves matching bank payments to those generated from the budget, mostly automatically. Tracking is not so much to see what happened in the past as to revise the budget and also to work out your current situation: what regular payments are coming due or overdue, how much of the current period's groceries have been 'carried over' and are available to be spent. It also handles debt scheduling, seasonality and changes over time, and gives immediate feedback as you make changes. WMB has 60 day free trial then costs $50, free for budget advisors.

I am with Westpac and I have tried asking them several times by email when they are going to offer a budget program to their customers. Each time they avoid answering the question. I then tried asking someone in person at a branch and she got quite annoyed with me. I left still wondering. It seems to be a sore point with them and I don't know what's going on. I feel left out because all the other banks are doing it. Anyone know anything. You would think that since their CEO is on several million a year they could afford to provide the service.

Thanks Matthew an excellent summary - I have been searching for months for this sort of information about packages with automated NZ bank feeds. I am an ANZ customer so very interested in buffer. I was about to swap banks as ANZ only provide the last 90 days on line - is this still an issue for Buxfer if u need to get historical transactions to get started..

Some good information here. But as a longtime MS Money user, I am still looking for an online (free) site that I can use as a replacement for Money AND to enable transfer of all my historical Money data to. Suggestions/comments would be appreciated
